The definitive look in Bromley.
Definitive Decor Ltd were given a great opportunity to transform this stunning refurbishment project in Bromley after completing previous works for the clients.
The internal revamp was carried out by a local building firm who completely gutted the home and redesigned the layout.
One of the first tasks was to spray the internal sides of all the windows, which originally started life in an opaque woodstain. The windows were sanded with Festool sanders and Mirka extractors, sanding out any brush marks and runs, leaving a silky-smooth substrate. Following this, two coats of Zinsser Coverstain was applied using a Graco gx21, preparation was completed with some filling and caulking and the windows were then ready for the top coats of Tikkurila ds25.
Once the windows were completed, attention was focused on the artex ceilings, which were all freshly plastered over, leaving a shadow gap running by the cornice.
Unfortunately, the plastering wasn’t up to the desired standard, so sanders were used to flatten it off with some minor making good and they were ready to be sprayed in Tikkurila Optiva primer to a finish.
Lewis McCallum, Director of Definitive Décor said, “We always use this product for its touch up capabilities, it’s great when working on site with damage imminent”
Once the ceilings were completed, work commenced on the newly installed woodwork. Purbeck stone by farrow and ball was chosen for the colour scheme for most of the home and the doors were spray finished in Tikkurila helmi 30 in white Satin. The staircase was a mix of colours with the spindles sprayed to a finish in white Tikkurila helmi 30. The handrail was completely stripped of its tired and aged stain and renewed with the help of Liberon ebony wood dye. This was laid on and left to dry, then wiped over with a damp cloth to catch glimpses of the original colouring. To finish, it was coated with two coats of eggshell clear varnish. After masking up, the newel posts and the rest of the stairs were painted in Purbeck stone, creating a stunning and unique contrast.
Next, moving in to the cinema room, the external side of the doorframe was masked off and the woodwork was sprayed in Farrow and Ball’s Moles breath.
With all the ceilings, windows and woodwork completed attention was then focused on the walls. After mist, the walls needed considerable attention to ensure a good standard of finish.
The bathroom and wc were both completed in Farrow and Ball’s elephants breath. The client’s office was completed in Little Greene silt 40 to compliment the newly installed built ins and furniture, with a wide wallcovering hung.
The colour scheme for the master bedroom, walk in wardrobe, staircase and kitchen was Farrow and Ball’s skimming stone.
Lewis said, “All colours were mixed to Tikkurila optiva 3 washable dead flat matt, it’s a great product which can also be touched up if need be”.
The living room ceiling and woodwork were sprayed to a finish and a beautiful wide wallcovering was hung on all the walls. To complete the look the fireplace was sprayed in Tikkurila helmi 30 mixed to Little Greene dolphin.
Lewis said, “Overall the project wasn’t the easiest, but we were able to leave our mark on such a beautiful transformation, one definitely for the portfolio and a great family to work for. We got some amazing remarks from visitors to the home, including the building inspector who said, ‘I’m completely blown away by the finishing of the spray work, the ceilings and woodwork are flawless.’ something every company owner likes to hear!”
Lewis McCallum started working for himself around 3 and a half years ago and thus Definitive Décor was born. Within 6 months Lewis had started his spraying journey, but he admits, “Not without a lot of faults due to self-teaching!” Building the business up organically, he decided last year to venture into more commercial work and larger contracts in general. In July this year, Lewis went ltd and increased his workforce. Lewis says, “It’s been great so far, and I feel very lucky to be in the position I am, where the company is excelling every day.”
