From 'Start' to finish in Salcombe
Burns Painting & Decorating have just undertaken work on a massive eight-bedroom new build property for a developer that they’ve done a lot of work alongside of in the past 5 years.
Trade Decorator talked to Liam Burns, Director of Burns Painting and Decorating following completion of this beautiful residence. ‘Start House’ is an Executive home in Salcombe, South Devon. Virtually all this project has been sprayed with a Graco 495 airless sprayer, using a selection of Graco fflp tips and Tri tech gold tips. As the property is a new build, there were certain specification by the building inspector that had to be met to meet building regulations. One of those specifications was that all ceiling and wall timbers had to be sprayed with two coats of the Envirograf flame retardant paint as base coats.
In order to create the perfect finish, all woodwork was filled using Toupret filler and amazing 122 tubes of Graft decorators sealant was used on the whole job. The main kitchen ceiling used 21 tubes alone. Liam said, “trust me when I say that my fingers were nearly bleeding come the end of that ceiling!”
Caparol from Paintshack, was used on the ceilings and wall panelling, which Liam says, “Is an absolute dream to spray.” These surfaces were given two coats of Caparol haftprimer. The ceilings were then finished with two coats of Caparol PU Matt, mixed to loft white colour. The walls had a mist coat and two coats of Caparol premium clean, mixed to French grey pale and the panelling and woodwork were all finished with two coats of Caparol PU satin, mixed to French grey mid.
Most of the wallpapers on this project were Cole & Sons bought through Brewers wallpaper direct. Liam said, “I have used a lot of their paper over the years and I have to say they are a dream to hang.”
Part of the way through this project, Liam and one of his colleagues attended the Painttech Academy Spray courses in Exeter with Ian Crump and Jack Frost. Liam said, “What we learnt over those two days really changed our technique and the way we approached and completed this project”.
The developer really loved the finish they managed to achieve with the sprayers. But for Liam, what really makes his work worthwhile is when the client appreciates his work. Liam returned to the property to complete some snagging once the client had moved in and her exact words were “I can’t believe what an amazing job you’ve done, we are over the moon with it” You can’t beat feedback like that!
Burns painting and decorating are a team of three decorators. Liam has been decorating since he was 14. He started decorating, working in the school holidays and the odd Saturday for some extra pocket money. After leaving school, he began his apprenticeship and did three years at college and completed his NVQ level 3 with a distinction. Liam started his own business at 19 years of age. After a couple of years with the business going from strength to strength, he then offered his brother Kieron a job. Kieron also went to college and completed his NVQ level 3. Five years later the brothers decided to go in to partnership together. Burns Painting & Decorating mainly undertake domestic properties and new builds for three local builders that they have built a good relationship with over the years and have completed quite a few large projects. In the last couple of years, they have undergone a change in direction in the methods they use to complete their work. They now spray 70-80% of the work they undertake. Eight months ago, they went on one of the Painttech Academy courses and that really improved the quality and efficiency of their spraying techniques. This has given them the level of skill required to take on even larger projects including the one featured here in Trade Decorators “Project of the Month”.
