Project of the Month – May 2018

Private Residence – Holloway’s bring a hint of sparkle to this home cinema room.

Trade Decorator has been speaking with Tom Holloway of Holloway’s Professional Decorating and Consultancy.

Throughout 2018 Tom has worked on a wide range of decorating projects. He said “each one has been totally different, they have all had their share of highs and lows. I’d love to be able to say that every project has always gone to plan but sometimes you are faced with problems that are out of your control, having the ability to overcome these issues is what makes a good decorator and a successful project”.

Whilst Tom couldn’t choose a favourite project of 2018 as there are many, here’s one he’s had the privilege to work on….

The attention to detail wanted throughout this project was second to none. This project included a home cinema room, large extension, dining area and bedrooms.

On first arrival at this job the walls were bare, the client was struggling to visualise the end result and Tom was excited to get started! After reassuring the client who was on site during the project, it was time to get going. Tom said, “the client was very down to earth making the project more enjoyable”.

Whenever you start a project you need a plan of action, focusing on how the job is going to run as well as meeting timescales. This is especially important when the client is still living in the property as you need to make the experience as comfortable as possible.

This being the case, Tom started with the mist coats and the ceilings and soon got those done within a day or two spraying at least 60 Litres of white emulsion. Then it was onto the walls using Johnstone’s Covaplus. There were no issues whatsoever and Tom was more than confident he could achieve the finish which was needed and used his Kana brushes to achieve perfect lines.

The woodwork was actually wood believe it or not, therefore, this needed knotting initially, priming using Coo-var Shellac based primer followed by the Crown Trade fastflow system and the end result was sensational.

As you can see from the pictures the client decided to create a cinema which in turn was finished using Johnstone’s Covaplus and a hint of sparkle! Using a glitter additive Tom made the TV wall a complete feature and this just finished the project off.

One of the challenges faced by Tom throughout this project was poorly plastered walls. Thankfully he had his Prep tools on hand to help him out. The Prep tool Tom relied on most throughout this project was his Prep long handle scraper to get rid of the snots as well as using his Mirka setup.

This project involved enormous amounts of spraying which is seen to be the way forward when working on large projects so for Tom his Graco GX21 and Ultra were essential. The site was fully prepared with lots of Masq Tape and Drape as well as Masq masking tapes. Due to the size of the project, significant areas needed to be covered and protected, without these Masq products courtesy of Ciret Ltd he would have struggled to complete this section of the project so quickly.

Tom says “there is a lot more to this project than meets the eye but I hope you enjoy the pictures and may the hard work continue throughout the remainder of the year as I have exciting prospects in 2019 already”.

Tom has been in the painting and decorating industry for many years, having worked for a leading paint and wallpaper manufacturer before taking the plunge and setting up his own painting and decorating business; Holloway’s Professional Decorating and Consultancy. His business has gone from strength to strength having been recommended to a top London interior Designer to work on a number of multi-million pound properties.
