Project of the Month – March 2023

From Unfinished to Stunning

How Professional Painter and decorator Sean Saunders Transformed a Bradford Abbas Home.

Sean Saunders is a self-employed decorator who has been in the trade for over 30 years. He takes pride in his work and strives for perfection on every project he takes on. One of his recent decorating projects was for a couple who owned a large detached four-bedroom house on the edge of Bradford Abbas near Sherborne Dorset. The couple, both successful business owners, approached Sean after their previous decorator failed to finish a room and left the work unfinished.

On arriving on the job, Sean was quick to notice that the previous decorating work wasn’t of the best quality. Nevertheless, he got straight to work and began to assess the situation. The client had already supplied all the materials, including House of Hackney paint and wallpaper, as well as lightweight architectural coving and panel moulding.

The client had a clear vision of what they wanted for their ceiling, with a dark cornice and a lighter colour on the outer part, and a light colour in the centre. They also mentioned that they would like to use the House of Hackney wallpaper for the centre of the ceiling if possible. Sean realized that the section with the double doors that they wouldn’t use would fit perfectly in the centre of the ceiling, and he began to work on a plan to make it happen.

Sean’s next step was to hang the House of Hackney Plantasia indigo wallpaper, which came in four lengths and rolls A&B. He used Solvite ready-mixed paste, which he finds perfect for hanging wallpaper. The wallpaper went up perfectly, and Sean was able to match the pattern seamlessly, creating a beautiful finish that exceeded the client’s expectations.

The client was blown away by the results and was over the moon with the finish. They were very appreciative that Sean managed to fit the job in at short notice. Sean was pleased to have delivered the desired results and satisfied the client.

The success of the ceiling project led to further work, with Sean being hired to transform the hallway, staircase, and spare room. Sean relished the challenge, knowing that it would test his skills and give him great satisfaction upon completion. He used the same attention to detail and finesse he employed in the ceiling project, and the results were fantastic.

For Sean, decorating is more than just a job; it’s a passion. He started his decorating career in the school holidays, helping out and earning some extra money. He enjoyed it so much that he was offered a job, when he left school on a YTS in 1982. He worked for the same contractor until 2015 when he went out on his own.

Attention to detail and finesse are the keys to good decorating, and Sean knows the importance of constantly checking and improving his work. He believes that one never stops learning and that every project presents an opportunity to refine his skills and learn something new.

In the end, Sean’s work on the Bradford Abbas project stands as a testament to his dedication to his craft. He met the challenge and exceeded the expectations of his clients, leaving them overjoyed with the results. It is this level of commitment to his work that has earned him a reputation as one of the best decorators in the area.
