Project of the Month – April 2023

Contagious creativity and passion.

Trade Decorator’s April Project of the Month features a new luxurious Airbnb property in Manchester decorated by professional decorator Lucia-Kreate.

The project boasts bespoke designs and intricate detailing, with every space and room in the property featuring murals from Avalana Design. The project is primarily for use as a luxury Airbnb, with a secondary use as a photoshoot location for Avalana.

The client’s goal was to create a different, original, and luxurious Airbnb property. The property is a collaboration of three businesses Avalana Design, Lucia-Kreate and Surfhouse Property staging and required Lucia’s expertise to bring it to life.

Lucia-Kreate was brought onto the project by Avalana to add her expertise in fine decorating, design, and fine joinery. The designs were incredibly intricate, and Lucia injected her own ideas into the already beautifully designed project. The main challenge was to keep the project “in-house” and limit the involvement of external trades. To achieve this, Lucia got in touch with companies and brands that would be suitable for the project.

Lucia’s first priority was to use environmentally conscious paints. She approached Victory Colours, and they were happy to collaborate on the project, providing eco-friendly vegan paint. Although the project aimed to remain eco-friendly, Lucia had to use oil-based topcoat for the woodwork because of the intensive use the property would undergo.

Having received the design mock-ups and brief from Avalana, Lucia was able to incorporate her own designs into the project, thanks to their previous collaboration, established trust and shared design style. As the mock-ups featured panelling, Lucia opted to use Orac Décor, as they offer a wide range of profiles and lightweight poly material, rather than wood or MDF, which eliminated the need for extensive preparation of sanding, sealing knots, priming, and avoided warping. This made installation a breeze, as she was able to simply glue and pin the mouldings to the wall.

Her attention to detail is evident in her choice of coving above the dining table, which had a groove to accommodate LED lights. She designed her own mouldings in MDF in the same step design to give the entire property a cohesive look. Lucia’s creativity didn’t stop there. She built curtain pelmets, radiator covers, and little storages for coats with the same design, making simple sheets of MDF look like high-end bespoke furniture.

Lucia’s resourcefulness and creativity were further demonstrated when she found a use for the wastage generated by cutting out pieces for the mural she was working on. Lucia could not bring herself to throw the paper away, so she decided to use it on the ceilings of the entrance hall. Having been obsessed with ceilings, before they became a massive trend. She put together a few mouldings and used the remaining paper to create a unique design that completely transformed the space and even managed to save most of the paper for the other rooms.

On seeing Lucia’s creativity, Avalana designed huge ceiling murals for the master bedroom and lounge. This presented a unique challenge for Lucia as she had never hung ceiling murals of this scale before. The murals were also particularly challenging as they were all black, which is notoriously difficult to work with as a decorator. Despite the difficulty of the task, Lucia was excited by the challenge and was determined to create something truly special for the client. Through careful planning and attention to detail, Lucia was able to successfully hang the massive murals and create a truly unique and stunning feature in the client’s property. Thanks to Lucia’s hard work and dedication, the master bedroom and lounge were transformed into breath taking, one-of-a-kind spaces that truly showcased her talent and ability as a decorator.

Lucia-Kreate is not your average decorator. She holds a Master’s degree in Marketing and Advertising, and her education is evident in the way she approaches her work. Though she studied Interior Design, Lucia wouldn’t say it’s her sole calling. She loves the hands-on process of drilling holes, building bits, and making her own stuff. But don’t be fooled by her tough exterior, Lucia still manages to look stylish and fashionable while getting her hands dirty.

With her education and background in marketing, She believes that exposing oneself to social media is a valuable tool in connecting with the right people and finding exciting new projects. She credits this approach to landing exciting projects like the one with Avalana, a collaboration that grew from a mutual love of design and style. Lucia values the importance of connecting with the people she works with and considers it a crucial element in creating a successful project.

Despite having no formal background in decorating, Lucia’s intelligence and drive allowed her to find her own way of doing things. Her process is unique, born from extensive research online, trial and error, and a willingness to push herself outside of her comfort zone. Her creativity and intelligence are evident in every project she takes on, and her clients are always thrilled with the results.

Her outgoing personality and positive attitude make her easy to work with, and she’s always up for a challenge. Lucia recently showcased her skills at Decorex and is now looking forward to Grand Designs Live.

In addition to being a talented decorator, Lucia is fashion and beauty obsessed, never leaving home without her signature long nails, mascara and funky dungarees. She believes that being true to oneself is key to success, and that finding a strong connection with clients is paramount.

If you’re looking for a decorator who brings a unique, personal touch to your project, Lucia-Kreate is the perfect choice. Her passion and creativity are contagious, and she’s always up for a new challenge.
