Inside the Newmarket project
Saxby Decorating was contracted by Axiom construction to undertake the decorating for this stunning single build project, just outside of Newmarket. Carl Saxby, director of Saxby Decorating said he loves working for Axiom as the carpentry work is always perfect and all of the trades they employ are of a very high standard, which makes the decorator’s life so much easier. This is a perfect example of how amazing a project can be when you have skilled tradespeople in every aspect of the job.
This is one of the biggest projects undertaken by Saxby Decorating, to date. Especially as for most of this project (due to Covid) it was just Carl and his apprentice working on site. Carl said, “I’m not going to lie it was quite daunting at times stepping back and looking at the size of the room you are about to take on. It’s amazing really that only a few years ago I would have been getting the 12” roller out on a project like this. Spraying properties means you can take on a property of this magnitude with a small team and still get it done!”
All the work was from new plaster and bare MDF. All plaster surfaces were primed with Tikkurila Optiva primer, all ceilings finished in AR2 and all white woodwork finished in Helmi. All MDF was primed then re-primed after prepping with Caparol Haftprimer.
The house has 24 doors internal doors which gives you an insight into the size of the house. All the doors had to be sprayed black along with the grand staircase at the entrance. Carl said, “This is probably the bit I am most proud of. Product-wise for the black doors and stairs, I could only look one way and that was Renner, how smooth it feels and how strong it is, it was a no brainer for these areas”
There were several preparation materials that Carl said he couldn’t have lived without on this project. These included hand maskers by Trimaco and 3M and Tesa tape which Carl says, gives an absolute guarantee of results every time. Spot drops were used for all the spotlights, and Carl rates these as probably one of the handiest tools he has. They are so simple but so effective, and now he has them he wouldn’t want to be without them. Finally, when doing the staircase most of the downstairs was complete. Carl used the Trimaco dust containment poles to enclose the area to contain the dust and extract it out the window. Carl found the poles so easy to use and enabled him to section off areas very quickly.
All work was completed using the Tritech T5 sprayers, which made light work of the job even on the big day spraying ceilings, they just kept going.
The biggest challenge of the job was the high vaulted area of the kitchen ceiling, it took a lot of planning and some innovation with extension bars to reach the surface. In addition to this, a slight change to the lighting plan meant a lot of wrongly drilled spotlights had to be patched, but thanks to a combination of Knauf fill & finish and Tikkurila AR2, you wouldn’t even know they’re there.
The nursery room was probably the most difficult to paper in the house but features some awesome Andrew Burr animal paper, which is so effective. Carl said, “It was a good challenge and now I think it’s my favourite room.”
The project took the best part of 2 months of solid work to complete but is one of Carl’s proudest jobs.
The new, very happy owners said these kind words on Instagram “Exceptional work @saxbydecorating we are so pleased! Your attention to detail is first class ? Thank you for doing a fantastic job albeit stressful at times ?”
Since finishing the job, Carl was told by Axiom that the owners said they “knew it was going to come up nice, but it is so much better than we could have ever imagined”

They also undertake some lovely wallpaper jobs. Carl said, “We absolutely love doing them, we always love the challenge of wallpapering and the end results look great!”
Finally, they also spray kitchens, it seems these are a massive part of a decorator’s business these days.
Carl takes great pride in his work and says the thing he loves about his job is definitely job satisfaction and happiness when you deliver what the customer has dreamed of.
