Project of the Month – February 2018

Borthwick Decorators undertake to restore the staircase of a beautiful four storey Georgian townhouse in Edinburgh’s New Town.

The staircase boasted some elaborate features that posed a bit of a challenge as the ceilings were so high and featured a stunning Cupola. To overcome the obstacles and bring the staircase back to its former glory Borthwick Decorators used a Youngman Group scaffolding tower and staging boards and implemented the use of Werner Stepladders and ladders and a Stairmate for the hard to reach elements of cutting in down each flight of stairs.

To achieve the stunning finish Borthwick Decorators carried out thorough preparation including some remedial work to the cupola and face filling all joints on the existing lining paper with Toupret interior filler as it adheres to paint well, is easy to sand and doesn’t grin or flash, which was critical on the tall walls of the staircase. The tops of the skirting were then caulked with Polycell caulk. Repaircare Dry Flex SF was used on the larger areas of woodwork that required filling, as it provides a durable fine surface finish for spot repairs on timber. All lights, sockets and switches were protected with Tesa Yellow Precision Interior masking tape, prior to painting. All sundries were supplied by the Dulux Decorator Centre in Stirling.

Before applying any paint, all areas were spot primed with Zinsser B-I-N Primer, as it adheres to most substrates really well and stain blocks and seals at the same time. It also dries really fast, which is an added bonus.

The stunning colour scheme was achieved by contrasting shades from Farrow & Ball. Farrow & Ball Estate Emulsion “White Tie” was used on the ceilings for its dead flat matt finish and the walls were painted in Farrow & Ball Modern Emulsion “String” to achieve a durable, long lasting finish that resists scuffs and stains. Modern Eggshell was used on the trim to provide a beautiful lustre and enhance the features of the wood. The finish on the balustrade was achieved with Dulux Trade Metashield Gloss in “Black” and the handrail was varnished with Dulux Trade Diamond Glaze.

The brushes of choice on this project were Purdy rollers and brushes along with Proform Picasso Stylus brushes.

The result is simply stunning with the jewel in the crown being the beautiful Cupola centre piece for this beautiful stairwell.
