CELEBRATING YOUR INSPIRING MENTOR

Advertorial

In November 2023, we crowned the winners of our 2023 Purdy Mentor of the Year competition at the P&D Show in Coventry. Designed to celebrate those who inspire the next generation of young painters and decorators, one award goes to a painter and decorator, and another to a college lecturer whose apprentices or students feel they deserve some recognition. Entries for 2024 have already opened so we wanted to find out more about what motivated people to nominate their inspiring mentors. Below we speak to Luke Smith and Stanley Lawrence, who nominated last year’s winners Glen Galbraith and James Reeves, to find out more.

Why did you choose to start a painting and decorating apprenticeship?

LS: I started my apprenticeship because I really wanted to improve my painting and decorating skills and hopefully make a long-lasting career out of it. An apprenticeship allows me to learn from people like Glen in college and then gain experience in a job as well.

Why did you choose to nominate your mentor?

SL: I felt like James was more than a mentor the moment I started working for him. He’s always really supportive and pushes me to be my best self which I’m very grateful for. I don’t think I would be the man I am today without him and nominating him felt like the best way to recognise that.

LS: All of us that nominated Glen believe that he deserved to be recognised for his hard work. He’s always really friendly and does his best to keep things interesting for us.

What do you think makes a good mentor?

SL: I think a good mentor is someone who provides you with guidance and constant support and who cares about your growth, both professionally and personally.

LS: A good mentor is someone who cares about developing your skills and education. They should take their time to listen and make sure that you’ve fully understood them before moving onto the next thing.

What would you say to someone thinking about nominating their mentor this year?

SL: If you know your mentor cares about you and your education, then nominating them for Mentor of the Year is a great way to get them the recognition they deserve. A great mentor can have a big impact on your life, and this is a great way to show your appreciation.
