Brixton homeless charity given makeover boost

A Brixton homeless charity has won £1,000 worth of decorating and DIY materials to spruce up its headquarters and to help those in need across London.

Brixton Soup Kitchen has scooped the prize from Leyland SDM through its Give London a Lift campaign.

Decorating and DIY specialist Leyland SDM, which has 32 stores across London, has given away £10,000 worth of materials this year through the scheme.

Brixton Soup Kitchen will visit Leyland SDM’s Streatham store, on 142-148 Streatham Hill, to collect all the materials required for the makeover project.

Solomon Smith, founder of Brixton Soup Kitchen, said: “We’re thrilled to win this amazing prize from Leyland SDM. It’s going to make a huge difference.

“We’re a charity which provides food and warm drinks to homeless people and the less fortunate in and around London.

“We have an open door policy so, though we’re based in Brixton, we support people right across the capital.

“This prize will allow us to purchase paints and materials to brighten up the soup kitchen.

“Most importantly, we help lots people find suitable homes so we will be able to offer them some paint, too, to brighten up their living space.

“I can’t wait to visit the Streatham store and pick up everything we need.”

This year’s Give London a Lift campaign was backed by former England and Arsenal footballer Paul Merson.

Other winners in 2021 include Acton Arts Project, The Brompton Fountain, South London Refugee Association, Dalgarno Trust and Caxton House Community Centre.

Paul Gerreli, Marketing Director at Leyland SDM, said: “We’re delighted to be able to support Brixton Soup Kitchen and the tremendous work the charity does in supporting homeless people across London.

“The materials we are providing will really help to improve the centre for visitors.

“Our knowledgeable team at the Streatham store will be on hand to help the charity select the best materials for their job and at the best price.”

Leyland SDM has become one of the most recognisable and trusted decorating and DIY retail brands in central London with stores in some of the capital’s most prominent locations.

This month the growing business opened its eighth new store of the year when it cut the ribbon on its Bayswater premises at 96 Bishop’s Bridge Road, London W2 5AA.
